The Intruder is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Deon Taylor and written by David Loughery. The film stars Michael Ealy and Meagan Good as a couple who buy a house in the country, only to realize its previous owner (Dennis Quaid) refuses to let it go. It was released in the United States on May 3, 2019, by Sony Pictures Releasing and grossed $36 million worldwide.

Plot[edit]

Married couple Scott (Michael Ealy) and Annie (Meagan Good) buy a house in Napa Valley from Charlie Peck (Dennis Quaid), a deer hunter who claims he lost his wife to cancer two years prior. Charlie tells them he staying at a nearby motel while he waits to leave the state to live with his daughter Cassidy in Florida.

Charlie becomes obsessed with keeping a close eye on the couple, and still sees the house, which he named Foxglove, as his own. He often shows up unannounced; Annie finds Charlie friendly and feels sorry for him, whereas Scott thinks he is annoying and becomes cold toward him. Scott regularly wakes in the night due to hearing creaking and the outside light turning on. Scott's friend Mike also suspects Charlie and is convinced Scott and Annie are being watched. A neighbour reveals to Scott that Charlie's wife killed herself using one of Charlie's guns.

Charlie also develops an obsession with Annie and begins visiting her at home when Scott is at work. One morning while Scott is out jogging, a truck runs into him and drives away, which turns out to be Charlie. While in hospital, Scott asks Mike to do a background check on Charlie and his family, who finds out they were in serious debt and Charlie was forced to sell the house. He also asks Mike to check on Annie while he stays overnight in hospital. Meanwhile Charlie turns up at the house and Annie invites him inside.

Mike visits the house and is confronted by Charlie, who declares he has a chance to get back all that he lost but must get rid of Scott first. Charlie then kills Mike with an axe. Meanwhile Scott contacts Cassidy, who has since changed her name; she tells Scott she lives in Maine, and moved away after Charlie killed her mother and made it look like a suicide. She claims he is a 'pathological liar' and a 'monster'. Scott also speaks with the motel Charlie claimed to be living at, and finds that he has never stayed there.

Upon returning home from the hospital, Scott demands Charlie doesn't visit the house again and files for a restraining order. Later that night while Annie is alone, Charlie appears inside the house. After he leaves she discovers a secret door upstairs leading to an underground cellar where Charlie has been living the whole time, complete with a bed and cooking equipment. Annie also discovers Mike's dead body in the refrigerator.

Charlie learns Annie has found his hiding place and a chase ensues around the house; Charlie prepares to rape Annie as Scott returns home. Together they overpower him before killing him with his own shotgun, after Charlie screams, 'You don't deserve Foxglove!'.
