The highest open-air rack railway in Europe climbs past Swiss stone pine and larch forests up to a height of 3089 metres. Once you reach the top you can enjoy breathtaking, all-round views of 29 peaks above 4000 metres, with the Matterhorn right in the centre. Surrounded by 29 four-thousand metre peaks, by the highest Swiss mountain (Dufourspitze, 4,634 metres above sea level) and by the third-largest glacier in the Alps (Gorner glacier), it offers a mountainscape panorama that couldn’t be more overwhelming.One of Europe’s highest open-air cog railway has its lower terminus next to the station of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn in Zermatt, from where it climbs the Gornergrat daily every 30 minutes.

Lower terminus of Gornergrat railway is located opposite the Zermatt railway station. Gornergrat Railway operates daily, year-round, at 24-minute intervals, from approximately 7am until 8pm. Travel time to the summit is approximately 33 minutes. Please be advised that during bad weather, mountain railways may close without prior notice.

Rail Europe will issue a voucher that is not valid for travel. This voucher must be exchanged within 6 months of issue at Zermatt Gornergrat Bahn station, located next to Zermatt main station.

If you are carrying a rail pass and purchasing a discounted ticket, you must show your pass at the time of exchanging your voucher. No date or time is required.
